2007 Consistent three-year-old Marching is set to give John Hawkes his third Victoria Derby after he dispelled doubts about his staying ability with an empathic win in yesterday's Group Two AAMI Vase at Moonee Valley.
The Commands colt romped home by 2-1/4 lengths from Kibbutz with Barbaricus 1-3/4 lengths away third and Damien Oliver is expected to stick with him in next Saturday's Classic.
The AAMI Vase (2040m) is traditionally the form race for the 2500m Derby and stable foreman Wayne Hawkes said he wouldn't swap any other Derby runner for Marching.
"We didn't know if he would run 2000 metres, but he did," Hawkes said.
"Next week is a different race but it is better to be in the position we're in.
"At the 2500 metres at Flemington I wouldn't be swapping him going in.
"He's going well and it is the right time to be coming right because the opposition isn't as strong this year, that's for sure."
Hawkes first won the Victoria Derby with Galena Boy in 1975 and more recently with Arena in 1998.
Marching gave an indication that he could be in the same class when he finished second to Incumbent in the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in March.
Last start he confirmed his class when finishing third to Weekend Hussler in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
